Dont have much experience with firewire but i believe they are similar to network devices , what i mean is they also have an ip address and shows up in network category in windows. Could it be firewall blocking an access. Sorry just trying to be helpfull in something i havent used...

if you perhaps run "ipconfig /all" in command prompt and find the ip address for your firewire and try pinging the ip number to make sure firewire is working and responding fine.

Nah the interface is just like USB, totaly plug and play, no need to configure anything even remotely network related.

I had the same problem at one point, turns out that i had to enable the firewire port on my camera though.
Are you sure its been enabled in one of the menues? as i know first hand that occasionaly its not enabled by default.

Another option could be to plug it into a different pci slot as resouces could be conflicting even though it is installed correctly.
Just a side note i have one aswell and i had to install a disk that came with it even though it was listed in device manager; this was to allow my digi camcorder to run with the video editing software so maybe different chipsets of firewire cards might need different setup options.
