    Laptop Ram Problem

I recently purchased a 1GB RAM upgrade for my laptop. On installation it didn't recognise this. I consulted Asus about my problem and they confirmed that the RAM was compatable and that it should work. I then used a program called Everest which detected the RAM in both slots.

Asus have since said to sent it back for repair but surely if Everest detects the RAM but the laptop doesn't then maybe its a BIOS problem? I'm not a wizz so I'm not sure.

    Laptop - Asus X51RL

Any help or a push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    Simon

For Everest to be able to see the memory it means its already working in the laptop or the machine the everest is running on. At the end of the day everest is a just a program.

If you are having stability problems where you installed the memory chips then as suggested using different slots or upgrading the bios might help. also if you do have older memory which worked on that laptop try to post us the specs or model numbers of the old memory and the new memory chips so we can compare.

      All the best.

        Nevovx -
        • Bios is completely up to date.
        • Switched the slots of each RAM - still only recognises 1GB RAM, this being the new piece.

        Biffo -
        • Not recognised in BIOS

This is perhaps why I think its the BIOS or somehow the second slot needs activating? I really don't know. Everest says the RAM is ok, the laptop runs fine just on that piece.

Thanks for the help so far.

Ok now i understand the problem better , thanks for the reply.
Seems like bios max support is the problem here. I assume it shows 1GB of memory in windows xp, am i correct ?

In this case i can only suggest try using 1 memory at a time and see if both memory shows 1gb on its own if they do work on their own then it must mean bios doesnt support 2gb memory in total when both slots are used.

            I'm using vista.

The spec of the laptop did say it supported 2gb on ebuyer when I bought it though and Asus confirmed it supported 2gb.

Perhaps its just one of those problems to persue with them!

            Thanks anyway..

Could it be 2gb in one slot and if both slots are used bios kicks it down to 1gb. Dont have much experience with memorys and laptop motherboards so experience just comes from desktops models to be honest. Also you havent mentioned if you tried the both memory chips on their own just to rule out a problem with compatibility using 2 different brands or incase one of the sticks are faulty stick.

http://uk.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID...specifications Download live update to double check the bios is upto date as sounds like a bios issue, i am looking for the systems manual now for the corrects spec/configuarations for the RAM

Also what it the specs of both memory dimms (there will be a white sticker on each dimm) Some motherbaords wont support differant speeds regardless if both ddr 1 or both ddr2 so double check that also

Hi did state bios was upto date.

Memory Dimms as seen on Everest

                      NANYA 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz CL-5 5-5-5-15
                      Corsair Value Select 1GB PC2-5300 DDr2 667MHz CL-5 5-5-5-15

Both dimms work as seen on everest shot.
Both dimm register 1gb and work fine when used by itself
So only thing coming to my mind is chipset not allowing 2GB when both dimms used.

Whats the onboard graphics shared memory size? as i ve seen people use 895mb for onboard graphics , also does system still show 1gb in bios or when you boot ?

I was suggesting a double check via live update

As a Last resort, i would think about returning the Ram back to the shop & tell them that it could be faulty, ask for a replacement, & be sure to take your laptop with you when you get the Ram module changed, that way you can test it there in front of them.

even after you have got the latest bios update etc & looked into other possible issues, i would be lookin at the ram as the 1st possible cause. its not un-heard of brand new Ram not working. as it has happend in the past but is few & far between. Ram, motherboards etc can be exposed to static during processing, before its dispatched to retailers.

In the Bios it says system memory 896mb, if that helps at all...

Tried all the live update stuff and there no problem.

I came across this, looks like it is the same problem for some people and not for others. ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- Ram Asus X51RL

Cheers for all the help so far anyway!
