is it a bios or windows password.

A bios wont let you see the windows log in screen, a windows password with ask for it on the log in screen

Would i be right in guessing its a Dell laptop?

if its asking for a password as soon as you switch on the laptop, then there could be 2 passwords on the machine.

                1. bios password
                2. hard drive password

to find out which password its asking for, remove the hard drive then boot up the laptop. if it still asks for a password its the bios password it wants & bcos u dont have it then u need to short 2 pins on the eprom chip to clear it using a paper clip. but will need to know the make & model of the laptop as the Eprom chip is located differently on each motherboard.

if its not asking for the password then its a password on the hard drive. in which case the best thing to do is buy another hard drive & stick it in, install your O/S then your away

                Street.

It seems like a bios password. Can you please post the model number of the laptop so we know what we are dealing with , thank you.
