Updated laptop to W8.1 - now have screen problems etc

I updated my fairly old but still good Dell 1120 M101Z to Windows 8.1.

I now have a blurry stretched screen.

I've updated all the drivers I can find, and things seem to be okay apart from the screen and the fact that it doesn't send a signal to the TV via the HDMI port.

I've been at this for days now and can't find a solution.

Any ideas please?

OK, I solved this.

The solution lay in the correct running of the compatibility troubleshooter. Phew.
