    USB flash drive with vista

somebody must have had this one before.

my computer has vista installed, when i insert any usb flash disk it appears to be recognised and indicates that it has found new hardware but does not show up in My Computer.

i've scanned the drivers on computer and all of the drivers are up to date.

one of the disks i've tried is an Easy Disk, the other is unbranded, it was a freebie. they both work on another pc with vista, this one is 9 or 10 months old.

I've tried uninstalling all the usb drivers then re-booted.
I still have the issue of the usb flash disks not being recognised.

By the way,I'm running window vista home premium

I thought that maybe the usb's were not working properly.
I've tried a usb mouse, external harddrive and a camera.
all these devices are picked up straight away.
    So the computer is ok.

the problem is with the usb flash drives only.
Could it be that the disks have old drivers and dont work with a brand new vista installation?
i use both of these devices on another computer that runs vista with no problems at all.

I'm running out of ideas now, can anyone suggest anything else to try.

download a programme called Paragon Partition Manager ( its on here somewhere do a search )

install it , and that will pick up your usb stick, sounds like it needs a format, could of got corrupt, or if its been formatted before to Linux, then windows wont be able to read it.

Paragon is best choice. format it to fat32 to use for PC to PC, or format ext2 or 3 if its to go into a reciever.

          EUREKA

Just to let you know that I've sorted the problem now.

There was a driver called 'realtek usb2.0 card reader', saved in the usb drivers in vista.
This is the driver that is being accessed whenever a usb flash disk was being inserted.
This driver must have compatibility issues with vista.

I simply uninstalled and deleted this driver from the usb controllers in the Device Manager. When I plugged the usb flash drives in, they installed the drivers required in the usual way.

Total pain in the 4rse sorted.

Thanks aftermath and dasteph for you help, appreciate it.
