if you are trying a wifi connection to your laptop then you probally wont get a connection until you first connect your laptop to your router with a ethernet cable in order to configure the router.

Reset the router and start from scratch.

there will be a little pin hole 'reset' button on the back near where everything plugs in. drawing pin/paper clip anything like that, stick it in and hold it. the router should be a factory reset and allow u to set it all up again.

is it a secured network ?

if it is you will need to enter the WEP key into your laptop in local and internet settings, in propertiies for your wireless card..

Check your DNS settings under your adaptor settings, make sure its set to autodetect or set to a DNS you know to be working.

This more often than not will solve the limited conection issues (ie theres little flashing monitors but no globe infront of them)

If your not even getting a limited connection id check the router settings and check the wifi standard being transmitted, some cards dont support A or N only B and G standards.

If the standards check out next check the encryption standards, some devices wont support WPA2 for instance or will support WPA2 TKIP only.
Make sure those match and that the passwords are the same.

If that checks out and your still getting no connectivity try adjusting channels 5 might be extremely noisy but 11 might be completely free in your neighbourhood for instance.
Also adjust transmit powers to maximum in case theres not enough signal strength to act as a carrier.

One or more of these should definately help.

Right thanks for the advice guys here is the state of play, I have a belkim MIMO router and a dell Inspiron Lappy,

My ISP is orange and I have a speedtouch modem, now this works fine with the laptop,

I connect the router up and to the lappy with the ethernet cable and the internet light flases orange, I put in the correct user name and password but yet no success, am I going to be going down the route of my lappy and router not being compatible?

Had an issue before for a client where a belkin router wouldn't work but a Netgear one would but I had to play with the settings 1st.

How are you setting your Belkin modem router at the moment? PPPoA or PPPoE

If you have it as PPPoA then change it to PPPoE with an MTU of 1430

Does your router connect to the internet? If not, then you have the wrong settings on your router.

Can you access router from your laptop? If not, then you have not connected your laptop to router properly? make sure network card on laptop is working.
