its is an old laptop, the hard disk could be on its way out... but you have just listed two very different problems above..

Agree's with Nige, you have explained 2 different problems there, so we need to narrow it down, always harder to do when you cant see it physically.. anyway...

when you switch on your laptop it starts loading.. passes the bios part & the windows logo appears with the blue loading bar under the logo.. then what happens ?????

does it... come up with a bluescreen & stop there?
          or..
does it just restart and begins to load again?

          next....

you mentioned in the bios & not recognising the drive..

does it ..show the drive at all ?
          or...
does it show sometimes and then not others?

if there is inconsistancy with drive not showing in the bios then you need to get a new hard drive for it, its really as simple as that to be honest. usually if any device is not showing in the bios then it will not appear in windows.

if the drive shows each & everytime you start the computer and enter the bios, then it could just be a software problem which means you would need to format the drive & re-install windows, but there is always the slim chance the hard drive has had it, another way to tell is if the hard drive is noisey when loading, if there are any ticking, or clicking sounds, they are usually the 1st thing you notice.

apart from that there aint much else we can go on with the limited information & without actually seeing the laptop im affraid. unless anyone else has another idea
