    External HD Problem..Anyone?

    Here goes.
I bought an external usb 500gb drive.
Was working fine and was storing files on it no problem.
Now when i plug it in it does recognize the drive for a few second then it disappears from device manager.

The drive is spinning but makes a clicking noise making me think it cant make its mind up where to look at itself.

I have tried all the usual recovery options within XP and also tested on another PC so i know its the drive and not a system issue.

It has 320GB of valuable info that i would like to recover from it.

Does anyone have any idea what program will do this for me.

Im looking for one that someone knows inside out and uses often.

Not 1 of the many that come up when you google.

is the drive still under warranty? If it is take it back and tell them you want the data off it so you want it repaired. They usually have a disclaimer saying they're not liable for any data on it but they might be able to fix it.

If not open it up, take the hard drive out and plug it straight into your computer and see if it works that way.

have you checked it in admin tools to see if it is there what OS you using ? if you can take it apart, do so and put it in your pc as slave hopefully it will show up

Not showing at all unfortunately. I think it might be goosed.

I used active disk boot into windows but unfortunately the drive doesn't show.

Im at my wits end with it just about.

I have got the drive and put it in the system itself it just wont boot past the bios allowing me to boot from cd.
The clicking noise coming from the drive is a worry.

It is an IDE drive and it is running slave.

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

This is also an error i get but i have no other devices interrupting the I/O Ports.

And wiith bios not picking it up im pretty sure the hard drive itself is in a bad way. Althogh it is not an old drive.

What make of drive is it.

Theres tools by manufactor that scans the disks and all other stuff, takes several hours to do depending on size of drives. but had a few bad drives that i managed to get going again.

One common one is Seatools from seagate.

Again depending on manufactor they might will have tools for the drive

If its recognized for few seconds bios will be picking it up.

Chances are it will be under warranty, but that not help you retrieve the data on the drive
