For a firewall i would recommend Zonealarm
    Free Firewall by ZoneAlarm

as for AV thats down to personal opinion.. I have used AVG free in the past and found it to be a reliable product
AVG Free - AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

I'd strongly recommend against AVG. Since about version 8, it has gone way downhill. The "Link Scanner" component is notorious for having issues (pegging CPU Usage @ 100%) and the only way to fix it is to uninstall. Microsoft's Security Essentials is far suprior and free as well. Are there better products than Microsoft's? Probably, but AVG is bottom of the pile now, in my experience.

try avast av free the only downside is you have to renew the licence key every year which is sent in a email when needed.
the firewall i use only on vista and windows 7 is windows7 firewall control which when used in 7 is that you can you use the windows inbuilt firewall and the firewall control together without any conflicts also it is easy to config and use.

I use and pay for AV NOD32. For me it has been a worthwile spend

For a free firewall I use COMODO and think it's hard to beat http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/d..._firewall.html

Just make sure you don't run COMODO AV at the same time as any other that you may choose. I find the AV part of COMODO too abtrusive and too complex to tweak.
