Windows Vista 8007002 error when doing windows updates

    Hi folks,

The wife has generously volunteered my services and told her pal I would fix her laptop. :slapsforehead:

It's really slow, riddled with viruses and just generally needs a good clean up.

I've installed a good AV and cleaned it up. Now I want to do a windows update and it's instantly bombing out with a 8007002 error.

I've read hundreds of threads on loads of sites about it and I've tried the following...

Delete the contents of these directories and retry update.
    C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download/
    C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/DataStore/

    No luck...

I've downloaded service pack 2, tried to install it manually and it said I needed to install service pack 1 first (D'oh!).
Downloaded service pack 1 and it errored with...

    Code:
    Error code: 0x8007000D.
    See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101139 for details.
Followed the instructions on this page which says to install a System Update Readiness Tool which also fails to install.

Some pages/threads are saying it's caused by a faulty .Net Framework installation so I uninstalled all previous installations of this but again...no luck.

System restore wasn't enabled so I can't go back to a previous good environment.

I know I could reinstall but don't want to.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd very much appreciate it.

    Thanks!

Service pack 2 for win vista...Not seen that 1 yet, bless win 7 .

To your problem. Try booting into safe mode with networking and trying updates there.
As the instalation was full of viruses i would recommend backing up personal data, ie photo's then a reinstal of vista.

Did you manage to resolve this error code problem? I have had this problem with service pack 2 for months now. Comes up failed reached end of file. Running vista ultimate (paid for). Not very computer savvy though. Seems plenty of people having same problem, i have noticed vista ultimate seems to have this problem.
