Sata HD on old M/B probs

Yet another hard drive prob.. sorry about all these HD threads lately.. this is long but please read

Im building a new pc and have a new tower and sata HD so far ..but still using an old MB and components.. bought them about 2 weeks but decided to just put the thing together today for abit of a childish christmas buzz

The M/B is this one ASRock > Products > 775V88 and has a P4 HT and 1gb ram and geforce 7600gs

Now it says in the M/B manual that it supports 1.5gb sata(first gen sata).. so I bought a Maxtor 500gb that has a sata1/2 jumper on it so its ready for a sata2 M/B when the rest of the pc is bought

So Ive the jumper on sata1 mode and it wont be detected when installing xp.. its just comes up 2 paragraphs saying no hard drive found

In the M/B bios there is no option about sata stuff or sign of drive details except one option to turn SATA RAID on in post(meaning hit TAB to assign RAID array).. once thats on in the bios boot section it shows the drive size so I leave this option on

I tried the Hirens CD to try and make some partitions to see if that may help but hirens cant see the drive with SATA RAID option OFF and can see it with it ON but gives an error anyway

Heres the thing I can install an OS and partition the drive like normal when I boot an old hacintosh OSX tiger DVD Ive had a while.. but I dont want this I just want xp.. (but I did install tiger to see if it functioned OK and it did boot and sees partitions and has no probs)

Ive done some research and on the sata wiki page it says some chipsets have probs with sata2 drives and mines is mentioned (VIA VT8237) but it says sata1 jumper drives should get round this......... Anyone have any ideas

i heard them via southbridge chips bug on sata 2 drives might try and update the bios and then setup the raid

I did have a flick through the website FAQS and stuff...

I just cant understanf why theres no SATA controller options in my bios.. theres all IDE stuff like AUTO and stuff but I mean it has onbooard sata so youd think it'd have some options available..also about the RAID setup, Im only using one drive and I thought raid was only a 2 or more HD option.. when I enable the only sata option in the bios to have a RAID ON POST button I can push TAB and it gives me a screen about raid array but I cant highlight anything it says... theres arrows and press enter instructions and stuff and shows 2 sata channels one with my HD listed but the only thing I can do is press ESC.. can I use raid using a single drive?

But then I keep thinking why does the M/B let OSX install no probs?

I dont have the floppy needed for RAID drivers when putting XP on and I dont want to install on another HD just to update the bios.. infact Im obtaining Win7 as I type... do you think that will install... or will it hog my pc spec

I wont be getting my new parts until mid feb so I need this up for my games and stuff(love ms flight sim).. got this cheap old spec for games to get me by to feb.. then Im putting together a more powerful build so I was thinking ahead hence the sata2 drive

My other pcs have lots of stuff on themand I dont want to format to install and update the bios of this board... this drive was bought in mind so I can get all the other pc's stuff onto a partition on it then get the other pc sorted.. its a pain in the ass situation

ok if youve installed all drivers and have latest bios for the board etc.

some mb's dont have there sata or raid functions in the bios there it could be by another utility you might have to enable it in the bios youd have to check.

as for windows 7 as long as you customize it a bit you should be fine

See I dont have a floppy drive to load the raid drivers from the MB disk.. I hate them IDE cables so I just dont want to be having to buy a floppy for 5 mins use cos I wont have it in my case.. going for a nice cable management system as the case has a window

as for windows 7 as long as you customize it a bit you should be fine

The torrent Im DLing is an extreme ultimate edition and it says its been stripped for more speed .. its nearly finished DLing will burn and try and post back...

set your bios to IDE or IDE COMPATIBILITY mode.install the os,it may have the sata drivers on the disk if not donwload from asrock.once thats done reboot and set your bios back to sata without raid.ACHI may have to be enabled aswell if its in your bios setting.hope it helps

Thats the thing there is no sata options in bios.. theres was IDE channel info but nothing about sata, I tried everything and the only option that has the word sata in it is in boot options menu it says SATA RAID TOGGLE DURING POST=enable/disable(and thats the only sata option)

I read something about IDE emulation and something like you say but I couldnt figure it out..

Anyway.. got win7... and YES!! it installed and runs very smooth.. Ive been spending all day trying to get all my files of the other 2 pcs and its not easy.. mainly cos win7 blue screens when I have one of the other pc's IDE HDs attached so I had to attach it then install ubuntu to see all attached drives and partitions to transfer the files.. then when I rebooted there was no GRUB just a message saying NO OS FOUND.. tried HIRENS would not get me ubuntu back but did get me win7 back... so had to install linux twice to see and get stuff off the other HD....BUT after all the transfered files and HIRENS got my win7 back I cant now see the 350gb partition all my files are on.. but again HIRENS to the rescue using ACRONIS to unhide the 350gb partition(its always hid during bootup)

Im happy all my stuff is working and all my files are on the a new good HD now.. but guess what I cant for the life me get any game to install in win7 everything bluescreens on my original games(HL2/FSX/FARCRY) all start to install then bluescreen... and with my DL'ed iso's it says image corrupt can not read and it wont unpack an iso from a rar file without an error during operation.. all these rars unpack on the other pc and iso's load ok... I dont know if its the P4 system or win7 stopping it, I bought the pc mostly for gaming and to house files
