On Hirens Boot CD there is a program called Active Partition Recovery, which is supposed to do this job. I have never used it myself so I can't give you any instructions, but it's there.
First, make absolutely sure it's not just a CMOS glitch that's screwed up one of its parameters.
I'd note down the CMOS settings for the drive and then autodetect it again. If it doesn't see it, return the previous data.
I'd then open a DOS box and see if FDISK recognises it. I wouldn't use FDISK /MBR at this stage though.
I just Googled: partition recovery vista
and it came up with loads of suggestions.
I'd begin with the ones recommended below, but before trying any of them, see if you can find user reviews. Most of these progs will probably do the job, but some may have been modified to plant a trojan on the system area.
Accordingly, either download from the program's source (Symantec, PC Tools etc) or use a reputable download site.
I don't use Vista, so can't even view the relevant area, but if you've got Partition Magic, it's a useful investigative tool. If it simply offers to flag the partition as active, it may be that simple, but if it (or anything else) says the partition needs a major fix, I'd see if other progs agree.
All in all, be as certain as you can be before deciding what to let loose on it.
