Can I run XP on an external hard drive

I have just upgraded to 7 PRO, hoping to use XP MODE, I have since found out my laptop does not support virtualization. Can I set up XP on an external HDD, create an option to boot from the ext HDD via usb, press f12 at start up & select boot from usb device?
If so how, idiot proof instructins please.

Best thing i can think of is to Partition your HDD on your Laptop.

    Install XP on first partition

Install Win7 on 2nd Partition, during installation it asks if you want multiboot.

    Thats how i did it..

Would you happen to know if I can fit a second hard drive into my lap top, or would I have to install a larger hard drive. does available space prevent a second HDD being fitted?

          Toshiba Sattelite Pro P300

Currently has 120Gb & upgrade to 2Gb ram.

one solution is to buy a bigger hard disk (WD 320GB sata 2.5'' costs 46euros in my country)
or make 2 partitions of 60GB on your current disk and install then windows xp and 7 in each partition

you could use the external hard drive, but the problem is that windows don't have any choice for the disk that boot manager will be installed and maybe it will be installed on the systems disks!!! to avoid that you can remove the laptop disk and install win xp to external!!
