    external hard drive problems

    hi
    i have just been adding a lot of files from my laptop to my ex hard drive all was fine
    i then tried to right click and delete one file on the hard drive which transferred by mistake and the hard drive froze with the "not responding " message at the top it was also making a funny noise,anyway eventually it un froze i unplugged it from the usb port waited a moment then plugged it back in and now there is nothin on the hard drive all my files have vanished
    the ones i transferred from my laptop are not a problem as i havent deleted them from there yet but the existing files that were already on the ex hard drive are a problem,,its all my pics and documents from the last year,,,,,
    my question is this
    am i well and truly ~~~~ed or not ?? should these files be retrievable ?
    any help would be much appreciated

      Have you plugged the drive into another pc ? If you have and it's still not showing your files,there is software to retrieve them. Don't put anything else on the hard drive incase it overwrites what you already have on it.
      Try this prog from the downloads Digital Kaos - Downloads - Recover my files
      If you have no luck with that try similar. i have recovered files many times using this or similar. Good luck m8

          blimey that was quick,im a bit of a novice and dont want to ~~~~ this up,one last question,when i plug the drive back in it keeps asking me if i want to format it which is what i had to do when i purchased it,i used a prog called swiss knife which was recommended to me on this forum,,,should i not format it yet,,,i dont really understand what its asking me to do

          also the recover prog is an rar file,whats the best prog to unzip it ?

              hi i have run the recovery prog and all is ok,,only prob is now they want 50 quid to purchase the product key to retrieve my files
              is this standard procedure ?

                      this one has taken 16 hours to complete the scan,,and only after 16 hours have i found out they want 40 squids for a product key !!!!! i feel like im going round in circles

                                  try File scavenger!!!! I saved a lot of times files from formated disks or with MFT problems!!!

                                      I recommend Paragon recovery utility. I had same problem and this worked for me.

                                          Paragon is fine, cnet and softpedia is places to find software and they tell you if it is free or not, hears like it was your Master File Table that corrupted, but there is also a free program for that on one of these
                                          I'm old but not dead yet.

                                              It's free, i haven't tried it but use other software from this company (cc cleaner) and it's great.
