BIOS Checksum error - defaults loaded

Looking for some help with a Checksum Error on a new buld

    System configuration:
    Shuttle SP35P2
    CPU - Intel C2D E8400 3Ghz
    RAM - 2 x 1GB Crucial DDR2 667 CL5 PC2-5300
    HDD ? 1TB WD caviar Green ? SATA 2
    DVD/CD ? Samsun SH-S223F/BEBE ? SATA
    Graphic ? XFX GT8600GT 540m 1GB DDR2

On first build, power-up into BIOS to set date/time and set boot from CD and loaded defaults, saved & exit. (Noted BIOS was SP35S204 ? this was first BIOS release for this machine release date Mar08. However it should support CPU being used.)
Machine did not restart (did not POST) after update. Following various combinations of powering off on front of machine and PSU on/off switch, disconnecting power cord and leaving for a while, the machine powered. On power-up some times it would POST and sometimes not.

Stripped machine down ? removed CPU, DVD, RAM etc and rebuilt ? much the same results
After much messing about, started to load OS ? WinXP ? is soon complained about missing files then BSOD. Same again with different WinXP build and Win7 ? missing files.
Contacted Shuttle and they advised the BIOS release was ?very old? and should update.
Updated with latest release SP35S20J (Jul09) using awdflash. On completion of the BIOS update POST screen shows ?Checksum Error ? Defaults loaded? ? into the BIOS and saved defaults, save&exit.
Despite setting the BIOS to display POST screen, it does not show.
Eventually managed to build Win XP OS and all seems well from that point of view. But I still have a checksum error and not sure what is the cause.

    Diagnosis ?
I am not trying to over clock any thing
    Clear CMOS at various times
Run with a single RAM chip, changed RAM altogether ? still same problem
Changed BIOS chip for another chip which has been pre-programmed ? still same problem.
Checked ? CMOS Battery ? 3.04v dc (using DVM) ? BIOS suggests it 3.24V
Interestingly, on power-up after the CMOS battery had been removed/reinserted, the CMOS reported that the CPU had been changed! As well as the checksum error ? I have tried to change BIOS parameters and setting a number of time since I rebuild the machine (removed all components and reinstalled) and it never once recognised the CPU had been removed!

My latest attempt ? change the boot order from CD ? HDD ? USB to HDD ? CD ? USB saved&exit and on restart it would not post. Back into BIOS and set back to CD, HDD, USB, still would not post.
Had to reload the BIOS from dos AWDFlash and once again see the checksum error ? load defaults (when I reload the BIOS its the only time I get to see the POST screen!)

Any idea what could be the cause of the checksum error and its reluctance to post after even a basic BIOS change?

    Appreciate any ideas.

    Thanks

    hi m8
not sure if your bios flash went well but if it did there is only one thing i can think of to remedy it.swich off disconnect power supply and look for reset jumper on mobo this is usualy by cmos battery there should be a jumper point and put it in for about ten seconds then take it out and power up this sends mobo back to factory reset since you flashed it bios may not work but i would deffo give it a try.

Change the battery! i have seen this many times and can also happen if battery week and then you unplug from mains. I would definitely change the battery.

thanks for the advice. dispite the battery reading 3.04v (no load) and the machine is new - i suspect it may have been on a shelf for a while as the BIOS version i a couple of years old.
I planned to change the battery anyway just go cross it off the list of possble causes - just a matter of getting a new one. will sort that out tomorrow. Thanks and regards
