New drive recognition

Hi,
I have just installed a new hard(second) drive in my pc. I am running on windows xp sp2 and the problem I am having is I cannot get it to appear in My computer. If I right click on my computer and go to manage, disk management, the drive appears there. However if I right click on the drive here I do not get the options to rename, format the drive etc which are available on the other drives. The only option available is help on right click.
Can anyone tell me how I can get around this and get my new drive displayed in My computer.

in xp control panel/administative tools/computer managment, in the box that opens disk managment down the let hand side of the box this will show hard drives on your pc, in the lower part of the box right click on your new drive you might have to activate it to format the drive once finished it will be given a drive letter and will then show in my computer.

Thanks for that but that is the problem, when i go to that menu in computer management and right click on the new drive I do not get the option to assign letter to the drive, in fact i don't get the other options either, the only option i get is help.
Is there any way this drive could be inadvertly locked and all access is denyed? If so is there a way of unlocking it?

what configuration is your new drive set to, is it set as slave with your existing drive on a ide cable (pata) or are they both sata drives.

go to bios and make sure your bios has recognised it thats why its not showing up on pc.go in bios set first ide hdd master then slave hdd on same ide. then second ide set dvd rom to master i'm assuming that none of your hardware is sata though.if it don't show up in bios ya get zilch

I have checked the bios and the new drive is in there, it even shows on the diagnostic screen during boot up. The master drive is sata and the new drive I am trying to get working is ide, does this make a difference?

here's the best way to do it it means a complete re-install of windows though sata drives are neither masters or slave drives i know this cuz i have sata drives in my pc .here's what to do disconnect your sata drive ya new ide hdd connect that one up first set to master and dvd rom to slave install os on that.once thats done then connect ya sata drive back on to mobo then stick os disk in and boot from it ,it means a complete reformat of ya sata but its the most hassle free way to do it i know i've been there.my pc consists of three sata drive's and one ide windows always looks for ide hdd first as it is master and holds the master boot record(MBR) for all other hdd's.

i used to have this problem...the HDD was recognized by Bios but not under XP..
you can use a program like "partition magic" to put your Hdd in NTFS (format used by XP)...If Partition magic doesn't see your hard drive, this one might be broken...
