fujitsu siemens li 1718 laptop problem

hi there im trying to sort a friends laptop out and heres whats happened they first gave this laptop to someone who said he new what he was doing and he said that he was going to put vista back on it as it wasnt running right so he has delleted everything off the laptop including vista and now for reason he cant do anything with it he said the laptop cant be repaired my friend ?130 for him to do that mad i no.
so i have said ill have a look at it and i only no a little about them i have managed to get hold of a xp pro disc and since spending the last 3hr trying to figure this thing out im now lost.
the problem is the disc goes to boot it asks about formating a partition so i do that then as it starts it seems to freeze because it stays on 0 percent for a while.
if i then reboot it will freeze at different stages or do the same as i first stated.
    any help would be good
    thanks for looking

Possible bad copy of disc or faulty cd drive, try another copy of disc. If still the same use an external cd drive.

Maybe it`s about the bad disk copy or the dvd drive, but I am afraid that maybe your HDD is dead.
