Blank dvd problem

Hi all, I've got a sony vaio laptop but have a problem copying onto a blank dvd, when I insert it it is not recognised, if I go to computer and right click on DVD RW Drive (F it shows;
Type cd drive
File system unknown

Used space 0 bytes 0 bytes
Free space 0 bytes 0 bytes
Capacity 0 bytes 0 bytes

I am using verbatin DVD-R discs and have also tried Phillips DVD-R aswell, funny thing is when I put a blank cd in autoplay pop up appears, but not with a dvd although I have set autoplay to "ask me everytime"

The same thing happened to me, but when I am in nero, it recognize DVD. Are you writing your disk from WIN or you are using some specific program.

second, maybe drivers for your DVD drive are not good for VISTA so comp does not recognize drive as DVD/RW.

have you tried dvd + discs could be the firware needs updating in the drive to regognise the type of disk you are using.

I have same problem with my dell inspiron 8600. It recognises some blank dvds but not all for some reason. Just try a a blank dvd from a different manufacturer.

Silly question but have you successfully written to a DVD at anytime with this drive?

A suggestion - if you want to try it - right click "My computer" click on "properties"

open "Hardware tab" and delete the entry for your DVD drive.

Restart computer upon which the "New Hardware" wizard should start and re install your DVD drive.

This may cure the problem.

Alternatively your drive may need the head cleaning or it may be faulty and as suggested previously try a different type and make of DVD media.

You say your using converx?

Let it convert and set it to create an image instead of burning straight from the cpnvert.
Download imgburn.
Right click on the saved image file.
Burn with imgburn.

Should work unless teh burned screwed

Thanks for all your help peeps, I've tried everything but to no avail. I always used this laptop for burning dvd's but I had a problem & had to do a system recovery, since then it won't recognise a blank dvd. If I open my computer & go to properties on my dvd drive it just states what I said in the original post. I just reverted to burning them on my pc.

Download an instal imgburn.
pop a blank dvd in the drive, over in the right pane, will be all info about the disc.
Check for firmware updates for the burner as well, let us know what the info in imgburn states.

Ok cunny, d/l img burn as suggested, put in a verbatim dvd-r & a phillips dvd-r and shows medium not present and doesn't show up in autoplay, I put in a cheap Asda dvd-r and it takes ages but auto play pops up & this is the info from img;

Thanks for the help and now I can copy dvd's using img but is there any reason why the more expensive disc's are not showing as present?

I would do the following :

try a lens cleaner on your drive.
Is it in warrenty? if so get the drive replaced.
If not then either replace it yourself or get someone who can replace it.

It sounding like a lazer issue.

Try looking for firmware updates too

Many thanks cunny & everyone else thats helped, it's out of warranty & I've tried updating the driver will try to clean the lens before attepting to change the drive,
