    ram upgrade

I have an Inspiron 9400 with 2x512 memory.

Is it possible to remove one of the 512s and replace it with 1x2gb or do these things have to be done in pairs?

it comes down to how much memory your motherboard can use, if for instance the maximum memory was 2 gig of ram then then 1 stick would be ok if its higher then the empty slot would allow you to upgrade further.

I would recommend crucial, although I often buy the memory elsewhere. It tells you how much memeory your pc can take and also the type of ram you need.

Agree with wornoutmumoftwo check out the maximum Memory that your PC can handle before you go any further as some PC's and laptops are limited of the size of memory can accept.
