    BROADBAND SPEED PROBLEM

    Hi,
I am with Virgin Media broadband on 10MB speed. I have noticed 4 days ago that it is taking ages to open a web page. Checked my broadband speed with Namisco Broadband speed checker which advised 2 MB.
Phoned virgin technical line. Engineer asked me to go on speed test net which gave same result. He then asked me to click start and run on my computer and then type cmd which displayed black screen (MS DOS). Then he advised me to type some letters (cannot remember what he advice me to type) but that brought all list of items on my computer. He advised me to count how many lines have adminstered written. I counted 40. He stated that because my computer has that many programmes running and they are accessing internet it is slowing the speed.
He then pased me to a technician who advised me that it is not their speed provider but my computer at fault. He will charge me one off fee of ?35.00 and advice me over the phone to fix the problem or else I have to take my computer to PC world. I was not happy with explanation and asked what if I buy new computer and plug in the same modem, would it give me 10MB speed. He said he cannot promise that. I think VM is surely playing games. I am thinking of changing to Talk Talk who are offering 11.5 MB with telephone line rental for 18.49. I have to pay for installation fee of ?40.0 and my telphone number will change because they cannot port same number.
Can anyone help me to check my computer without taking to PC world and boost my speed to 10 MB without moving to Talk Talk. I have received mixed response of Talk Talk and I do not want to jump from frying pan into fire.
Any help would be most welcome.

the first thing I'd do is try someone else's computer on your line, or take your computer to someone else's and try it there, see if there are any speed differences.

The speed you get also depends on the time of day you're on. If you're on in peak time (evening) your speed will be slower.

If your computer does is the problem, then you probably do have too many progrrams running. I'd do a fresh install of windows to get rid of all the crap that's built up in the registry over time. Increasing the memory is also a cheap and efficient way of speeding your machine up.

Mate whatever you do don't get talk talk, my friend is on the 24mb package and rarely gets over 2 or 3mb's. I myself have virgin media, used to have the 10mb package was brilliant always quick then upgraded to 20mb and got a new modem for router free of charge and the speed is amazing.

what he has done , is checked your computer for viruses, those "lines" you counted to 40 are internet connections running, this is why your connection seems slow. in other words you comp. is infected. i had same speed prob, was talked through same proccess and only had two processes or lines. you should run anti virus, malware progs, see what results are.

i second that, talk talk is pure p*sh, speed is highly volatile, neighbour has it, she's never off the phone mopaning at them.

id just like to add that many peeps have programmes on the pc,and they have it set to auto start with windows,so in effect they may have dozens of proggys all trying to start together/running together, even though you maybe only wanting to use one, what im trying to say is a proggy should only start when you want it to,and its better to be protected from getting a virus, rather than trying to get rid of one, some ~~~~ers beat all the scans,as thats what viruses are designed to do. and they all blame the isp,but in most cases its the pc at fault. but hey thats my opinion

I use a small program called winpatrol. This alerts you to programs trying to execute into the startup programs.

You can easily remove these programs with this little bit of software and its always on the lookout for anything trying to sneak in the back door.

                Best of all its free.

you could always type ms config into the run bar and click on startup then remove all programs that start on computer start up then see how this affects your speed.

Thanks to all those who have responded because individually it will be too long.
                      Somthing I tried today.
I got on my computer at 5 am this moring. stayed on until 7 am. and every 15 minutes I kept checking my speed on speedtest.net. It showed me 10 MB all the time. I phoned VM technician at 7 am to inform him and asked him to see for himself. There is facility on speedtest.net to post the speed on net which you can provide URL address with unique test result number to technician who can see the result of the test himself by logging on to that link. VM technician confirmed he can see the speed is 10MB. The result also provides you date and time of test and test result at that time (try it yourself).
I came from work at 5 pm and switched on my computer and checked the speed and it is showing me 1.96 MB. Phoned VM technical helpline. Call was transfered to Delhi, India. The technician started talking bullshit about my computer. There is a facility on speedtest. net to choose upto 3 servers. Mine is Coventry, Birmingham and Manchester. I got result as follows: Coventry 1.96 MB, Birmingham as 4.76MB and Manchester as 4.87 MB. The test was done with in 2 minutes. I posted each one, one by one on the net and asked technician to verify which he did. Then I asked him why is the result different from each server? I am using same computer. He could not answer the question. I have sked him to make a note on my a/c and asked him to trasfer my line to Birmingham server. He stated they cannot do that and finally he booked an engineer to look into my case.
Moral of the story is don't believe what VM are stating because they are not expert only call centre staff to fob you off. I will update the thread if I have any more results. Try it yourself if you are in same situation as mine VM promotes the speed checker on their website. It is spedtest.net if you want to google. Be warn speed checker will try to scan your computer if you are not careful and then try to sell you their stuff.

ive had same problem, they got me to download 2 game files from vermin then done some sums and decided my speed was ok, however when i done speed check while i was talkin to "customer support" speed was 1 to 3 m instead of 20m . i had some carry on with them. speed came back up without vm doin anything.... there a bunch of t...ers, they take the stance that your thick as shit and your comps slow as a week in the jail....
