You will need to patch the version of xp with the compatable sata drivers.

I have bought a new compaq presario cq61 laptop and am trying to install Windows XP on it. As soon as I start the OS installation I get a blur screen cause there are no Sata drivers in Windows XP ther

You will need to integrate the Sata drivers in windows xp disc and windows XP CD.

No F2 function or DEL function will do the trick. You will need a second PC to make the disk

      1) Download NLITE from the web nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation - Download

      2) Visit HP.com and locate the drivers you require for the SATA Hard Drives

      3) Install NLITE

Now copy your windows XP disk to a folder on the PC you will use to make the disk.

      4) Open Nlite

follow the prompts as you require

at the end it will ask you if you want to "integrate drivers" click on this button and locate the drivers you downloaded

( I know with my CQ 61 there was 2 versions and i had to make about 5 disks before it worked)

REMEMBER TO SELECT THE OPTION TO MAKE THE DISK BOOTABLE

you can add as many drivers to the setup as you like

      Hope that helps

what hardware do you have m8? Virtual xp mode is very stable, strange your crashed. have you installed the patches for Virtual PC.. if not that might be the problem. Got several WIN7 64bit pcs working fine with XP mode. I recommend you to do a full windows update.

Is your Windows 7 ultimate stable on your pc? i have had quite few bad experiences with AMD Turion. if you have the event log from the crash of the virtual xp, i might have a look at it.
Try the xp mode update from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

Do let me know what the results.

I'm also looking xp on my pc(using Win 7 ult at the min)

Can this be done by getting a Win xp iso then inserting the driver into it, then putting the iso onto a usb thumstick and installing from that?

My pc is all highend xp spec, and I'm fed up with games not installing or running properly in Win 7.. I was under the illusion only a floppy drive could do this, guess I'll try it these ways then

You can install dual boot system WIN7 and WINXP on separate partitions, for gaming you go on WINXP. However if you still having problems with the WIN7 and old hardware, then a complete WINXP installation is strongly recommended. WIN7 is very demanding in terms of memory and processor power. If you lack hardware power, then do revert back to windows xp who has proven game ability.

I just wanted to add that when I was installing Win XP on my PC, I needed to install SATA drivers from floppy during system installation.

Look into the BIOS, look for the chipset settings and look for SATA controller, see if oyu can change it to 'IDE or Legacy' - it'll then think it's a normal IDE Controller with hard attached.
