can anyone tell me if it is possibe for a Atheros AR9285 wireless network adaptor to go into " monitor mode " with the correct driver installed. If so, where can i find the right driver? The laptop is a Samsung R730.

From the jist of your post is this anything to do with using aircrack-ng? If so i have experience using that program.

Ok so how are you using aircrack-ng i.e are you using vmare and running it through windows or are you using backtrack?

Give me as much information as possible please.

I have only just been given a copy of aircrack, airopeek, airsnort and backtrack 4 and know little else about using or installing or which is the best or in my case the easiest to use. I have 2 laptops, the samsung i have already mentioned and a toshiba satelite m30. The samsung is brand new and obviously has windows 7 and the other has xp. I hope this is enough info to start with. Is it easier to e-mail direct?

Backtrack4 is a Linux distro run from a live cd. Install the ISO onto a cd with imgburn or flashdrive with unetbootin (this is a lot faster booting than the cd).

Once you have done either of those place into the lappy & boot her up. You may need to change your boot sequence in the Bios.
At the prompt type 'startx' & hit enter. If asked for a user name & password it's 'root' & 'toor'

You can play with WEP encryption straight from the live enviroment.
WPA & WPA2 need dictionaries to attempt cracking. This will need the live cd/flash drive installing onto the HDD.

I would suggest using the xp machine. The live enviroment has an icon 'install.sh'
just double click & follow instructions. The partitioner needs you to slide the bar across until you're happy with the HDD size for both XP & Backtrack 4.

Something like this with one of these will keep you busy. I've just ordered one of these so I don't have to move off the sofa. Unfortunately I can't find the 17db antenna listing I picked up for ?4 from china.
