Hi all, my sons Acer laptop wont boot up. It starts for about 3 seconds and then gives up. Is there any hope for it or is time to invest in a new one?

Maybe a silly question but you never mentioned if the problem happened when it was plugged into the mains or just when it was runnng on the battery alone. If it's ok on the power lead then it's your battery
THE TRUTH
The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12
Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.Comment

Acer lappys are coonts for over heating and cutting out.
Had the same problem ... took off the back and gave it a good clean ... worked ok from the mains but not the battery ...
Bought a new battery and all working ok for now (except the blueray drive which has gone tits up again) ...Comment

Ive seen 2 different laptops do this.. (Compaq Presario and Tosh Satellite)
Both laptops were given to me to sort out different problems than this one.. but I noticed they both done this when booted up, even when plugged in and charged fully.. they eventually came on though after a few tries
And even after I sorted them they still done this sometimes when I was trying to switch them onLast edited by Sirus; 17 July, 2010, 21:56.Comment

ram sticks frozen, loose bios battery on the board ?
try booting and hit F-8 or 10 or 11 and try to get to the setup screen. then reset the boot startup order to C: as first, then others. if that doesnt work, do this again and set the set the order to CD Rom drive, and use a boot disc or an install disc to bring the sector back up into safe mode. find problem, reboot to normal, then run the system restore function for the recovery disc, created on the drive itself, to a previous state, or to its original factory settings if needed (will lose all data)Dance _ while the record spinsComment
