    could be a few things,
    bad ram,
    bad hdd,
    bad video ram,
    driver conflict,
does it blue screen before it goes off?
if it does blue screen, when it restarts press f8 if it doesnt go to the windows diagnostic screen select the "do not restart on system failure" option.
next time it shuts off on you it will just stay at the blue screen telling you what caused the failure.

have a look at hirens boot cd,
    Hiren's BootCD 10.6 - www.hiren.info
use a few of the testing tools to find out which part is failing,
theres also a bluescreen viewer on it that looks for the dump files from the blue screen you can use that to view the logs to find out what faild.
if they all come back clear it's probably some driver conflict or something, or maybe a virus.

Or it could be overheating. Does the fan sound like a jet taking off before it cuts out?

Or does it just cut out when you have it on your knee?

Laptops, notebooks & netbooks all need to be placed on a hard flat surface when using. If the vents are covered it does bugger them up a bit.

mine cut out like that and i sent it back under warranty, they never found out what it was,it was only on a flat table and it would go just dead no warning, remove battery blow in to cool it and it would work again, probably a joint separating on board when getting hot.well known on some laptops

This is a handy little program, if heat is the issue this should help you diagnose the problem, I've tried it on a few laptops mainly toshiba's and it's been good

A cooling tray might be the answer if you confirm overheating. The laptop already has a fan built in, a cooling tray just helps move the air around the vents.

if the unit is around 3 years old vents may be blocked with dust and reducing airflow.

I have the same problem with my Acer 4150, I found out it was overheating after about 45 min. I read somewhere its down to a bad connection between the cooling fan and the cpu + heatsink paste been dried out too. At the moment Im using the acer epowermanagement an using my cpu speed on low/medium and it works. (not fast)
I cannot see the point fixing it as its over 3 years old.

                  Hope this helps!!

It will cost you a couple of quid for new paste & an hour or so to fix.

I'm sure there will be videos on youtube showing how to take the laptop apart & repaste the CPU. There's no reason a teenager couldn't do it.

Another problem with acer is the batteries ... i had the same problem tried a cooler and everything i could think of ... read a thread on the net about battery probs, so replaced the battery and hey presto no more problems.

My Fujitsu Siemens AMILO laptop will shutdown after a long time if it has a lot of work to do. With mine I have a seperate fan switch that I forget to switch on sometimes. I haven't go around to dismantling it to blow out the dust.

An exellent free program I would recommend is Speccy, its made by the same people that make CCleaner, Defraggler and Recuva.

This will show you the internal temperatures and the colour will change if its running too hot. This will tell you if its an overheating problem or another problem you have.

it's suggested more then once, check the fan.
Overheating is the most common fault.

open her up and clean with a damp cloth (not wet!)

Turn the lappy off then take it outside and blow low pressure compressed air through the cooling exit port.

Don't use too much pressure. All you are trying to do is reverse the direction of air flow to dislodge the accumulation of dust and fluff that is interfering with the heat exchange. Dust and fluff is an effective insulator, especially when it builds up on the fan and the fins of the heat sink.

After you have finished choking on the clouds of dust that will come from the lappy, test it to see if the problem has gone.

It will cost you three parts of stuff all to try this before you start disassembling the laptop.

                            cheers!

I just repaired shutdown problem in my home-pc.
I noticed that computer was shutdown everytime when I tried to scan harddrive with virus program, or spyspot.
Problem was overheating. I removed heat sink/fan , cleaned processor and put new cooling paste.
                              Not it works...

I have had shutdown problems sometimes in my laptops.. problems were in battery charger / battery
