When ei.cfg does not exist, Win 7 setup process will display a screen during Install and ask user to select the operating system to install. (Win 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate edition.) This is a pretty cool trick. No need to wait for disk from vender.

Hi Ted Windows 7 minimum requirements are a 1Ghz processor 1Gb of ram 16Gb of hard drive space and a Direct X 9 capable video card. the built in drivers in my experience are good although checking availability of manufacturers drivers is very good advise.

When I put Win7 Enterprise on a friends Acer NoteBook there was no option to format the drive and a fresh install over WinXP. There was just install over original. When it started up there was a C:\Windows.old and C:\Program Files.old folders which were obviously the old system, I just deleted those folders and it more than doubled the disk space.

Everything worked ok. I installed Office 2007 Enterprise which he had and as it was installing a message popped up saying Windows isn't genuine. Computer properties showed 15 days left to register. A friend installed something that got rid of the message and the 15 days notice.

Now I think they put something in 2007 install that must check this. I have Office 2003 on my Vista laptop and one of the updates is Office Genuine Advantage Notifications which I don't install. Not because it isn't genuine but I've had loads of trouble with WGA on my WinXP. I installed it as an update and after it restarted it said Windows was counterfeit. It is genunie hologrammed CD with COA. I clicked the click to check authentication, not genuine. I emailed M$ over this detail and they said its an OEM version. So OEM can be genuine but they wouldn't do anything about it. I had to do a system restore to remove it.

I avoid anything to do with WGA now. With Win7 you can set which options you want displaying on Win Updates. If you see something there everytime that you don't want you can remove it from the list. I which Vista had the same option.
