random black screen at startup?

im using win7 64bit.. i'd say its a 50% chance, every time i boot my laptop im getting a black screen after the Welcome screen.. ctrl+alt+del does not seem to be doing anything.. but if i wait long enough (5mins or so) it will show the desktop and work as per normal.. and other times it will startup no problem at all.. its well annoying!!
im very confused? =S

could it be that 50% of the time you are shutting down the pc, and the other 50% you are hibernating.

Some pc's/laptop's dont cope well with hibernation, and end up chugging along whilst loading all the data from hard drive back into ram.

other than that, you might want to look in the event log, and check what errors have occured recently.

I've disabled hibernation, always do a shut down, so that's out..

had a look in event viewer and the only error that came to attention was Winlogon application, event id 4103, 1 error in the last hour, 2 in the last 24 and 17 in the last 7 days..
any suggestions?

a validation failure error.
is your product key on operating sytem check to see if it valid?

if all fine with product key.

check ram and might wanna reset bios to make sure its not corrupt (if bios fine then dont)
and reinstall graphic drivers.
