    try resetting the router, disabeling the network adapter and turn it all on again.

    It can be quite a lot of settings that are wrong.
    Do you have other wireless connections running at the time?
    Does the network adapter of your daughters laptop support the used security protocol (ie WPA, WPA2 etc.)
    have you tried to reinstall the driver of the network adapter?
    have you updates Windows?

    lot of factors...

      looks like the laptop is denied access for some resaon; after time-out it aquires an addres in the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx range but that's no use for you; Check if there are any rules in the router on what you could be denied such as mac adres;
      If else fails reset the router; I had to do it with my router/modem once to solve a problem like this.
