      Try this:

Download PartitionRecovery 1.0 Free - A software utility that recovers a partition accidentally deleted. - Softpedia

Active@ Partition Recovery. Recover Deleted Partition. Undelete NTFS & FAT partitions.

No do not format the drive. Do the recovery first and try to make the partition.

Never ever do a format yourself .... Best way to certainly lose your data.

first - try to use another cable from pc to hdd. it's most common problem.
try to read hdd on another computer. if still requests formatting - maybe fdisk /mbr can help. i don't actually remember it's command line, but there is switch which fixes master boot record, which have partition table.

You should try simplest things first:

                - try another cable as uncle_sem said
                - try connecting the drive to another computer
                - take the drive out of the case and put it either in another external case or into the desktop computer (you could also put it inside your laptop and check the contents with a Linux Live CD for example if the external drive is 2.5")

                  Dear All,
I was having the same issue . It is very simple to fix it.
run in command line chkdsk <Driver letter>: /f

                  Your should look like this

                  chkdsk G: /f

                  Regards,
