    XP updates keeps scanning

    Hi folks.

I recently had to replace my laptop hard drive.

Reinstalled XP. Activated it, installed the Windows Genuine Advantage thing and the latest updating software from the Microsoft website.
I then started to install all the updates offered including SP3.
Now, a few weeks later something has gone wrong.

When I turn on the laptop automatic updates starts and takes up all the CPU capacity.
I switched off automatic updates and tried to update manually.
But all that happens is that the updater keeps scanning but never lists any updates using either the express or custom choices.

I'm using Windows firewall and AVG free.
The laptop is hard-wired to my router for updating.
My desktop PC has no problems using the same router and same firewall and AVG settings.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

It must be supported because my desktop running XP still gets updates every month (security issues, malicious software removal tool etc.).
The problem seems to be with my laptop not getting updates, rather than XP or Microsoft in general.
I've also tried updating with AVG free removed.

the link may solve your problem with updates.

You cannot install updates from Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Update after a repair install of Windows XP or after you install Windows XP SP3 immediately after a clean install of Windows XP SP2

            The link got me started.
Had a look at the extra info on that page.
Now my laptop can now update again.
            Nice one.
            Thank you.
