you could try clam antivirus portable which installs and runs from a usb drive before doing a format, but make sure you update before using.

        Use Malwarebytes.

        Malwarebytes

Between that and a good antivirus I've not found anything that can't be removed.

Just try the above in normal startup and run it. If it doesn't clean it then boot in safe mode and run it again.

i just wiped the pc clean and started from fresh, its working fine now except one little problem, when i cleaned it out it saved a folder of all the old stuff that was on it and its 17GB in size, the problem is it wont let me delete that particular folder, the computer is running fine and it dosent realy bother me coz its a friends pc, but if i could delete it easily i would.

                  any suggestions...OZ

                    Is the file locked?

If so you can use a program called unlocker for windows to get rid.

                      What i would do:
Install Your hard-drive as a slave in another PC which is working fine and has up to date Anti Virus and then scan the Your hard - drive

can you open the folder and try deleting the stuff in there, not just trying to delete the entire folder, you should be able to delete a lot of stuff and get back some of the 17gb

Boot up into safe mode. Do a system restore to a date before the virus. This should stop the virus from activating itself. Then reboot into normal mode, i'd back up any data you would like to keep.

Or if you could get us the name of the virus we could help to remove it.

You could also do another instalation of windows WITHOUT FORMATTING THE HARD DRIVE and collect any data that way.

Once data is recovered, i would be definatly formatting the hard drive clean and starting again.

Once all back and running, data is returned to laptop, do a full system scan, including boot time scans with the chosen anti virus software you use (i'd be tempted to shift ship if he had 1 running and got a virus)
