hi guys, does anyone know why my comp keeps shuting down, thing is for the past couple of weeks now evrey so often my comp shuts down while iam using it, the screen goes blue and it shuts down then re boots, ive looked in the error log evrey time it does this and this is wot it says,windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown..

and the latest shutdown says..bccode 4e
in short does anyone know wot these coads mean, and if so how do i stop this from happening again, cheers..chris....

computer is infected with a variant of the HaxDoor virus.sorry but you will in the end,and probly very soon will have to re format your hard drive,,quite common,so boot up in safe mode and save whatevr you want before you clean ur system by formatting.hope this helps.hit the thanx.

Try using memtest or WMD. best is to google for windows memory diagnostic. then you must download and burn it in CD. after that just boot with cd in and let it run. probably must be a bad memory. post results. cheers

download Hirens boot cd it's fantastic, it has it's own enviroment you can boot up in win mini xp and then run rootkit virus software like unhackme, do a google search for rootkit virus scaning software, there's alot of good programs that will help you, Hirens boot cd has got memory diagnostic and antivirus software on it, it could very well sort out your problem by itself,
ps. i have a saying that i use when all else fails Hiren comes to the rescue.

This page may help in determining if you have the HaxDoor virus.

You may receive an error message on a Windows-based computer: "STOP 0x00000050" or "STOP 0x0000008e"

Check the windows event log there may be extra info on what caused the error.

Failures like this can often be caused by hardware as well as virii, failing memory, failing power supply, CPU overheating - check all heatsinks are clear and fans are running, try removing CPU and renewing heat-sink compound (this may have deteriorated). Check to see if there is a DrWatson log - possibly here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\drwtsn32.log

hi guys, thanks for all ur help, found the prob it was adobe reader it was out of date, ie adobe reader 7.0 has knowen issues with windows vista,, so i down loaded the latest vervion of adobe reader 9.4.0.1 that sorted my prob out, thanxs again for all peeps help wiht this prob..chris...

BSOD are usually hardware related issues, ie ram motherboard.

I would format (low level)the hard drive, reinstal vista with latest drivers for EVERYTHING that is connected to pc.

Then goto system properties, startup and recovery, un check the box for auto restart, this will keep the BSOD on longer to get all info on it.

Then if they still persist, i would be downloading hirrens boot disc and be doing some ram tests

hi guys, thanx for all ur replyes so far,i have read wots been said to me so far but as i have never done anything like this before i need to be absolutley clear on wot iam doin, one thing i do know is this rebooting of my comp is really doin my head in as its booting about 3-4 times a day now so i know somthing bad is goin on,,ie virous,, now can someone talk me through fixing this prob in laymans terms as i dont wont to f**k it all up ,now this is wot i do know,
i know how to bk up my files and programs on a disc,
the rest i need help with,
how do i reformat my hdd?
i do not have the vista os on disc to re install when complete, so prob in a nut shell am i screwed? any help on this would be great, cheers guys and look forward to ur replyes..chris....

Ok goto system properties

Under the the advanced system properties
Goto startup and recovery
goto options
UNcheck the auto restart option

Then post us the stop codes

You need to run some RAM tests.

Download HIRENS BOOT CD and use the ram tests from that.

If ram comes back clean then use this guide http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...gineers-57578/ to format and reinstal windows using the serial that came with your pc/laptop

It looks like a RAM issue from the stop code
