hi guys a friend of mine had an acer aspire laptop and has been having some problems for a while now. His battery does not seem to hold a charge and when you remove the charger he is lucky to get 5 mins before the laptop switches itself off. A 100 percent charge says 0 percent when the machine is started up again. Also if he removes the battery and just has the charger plugged in he still only gets about 5 mins before switch off. I have checked his power management setting and set them to never switch off whether battery or charger but the problem still persists. Has anyone got any ideas to what is causing this or should i just change the battery and the charger.

If he has taken the battery out and has the charger plugged in still gettting the problem then it would suggest the problem lies with the power adapter. most of these adapters have an led which should be on when it is activated. Possibly the wire on the adapter has a break on it. It would be good if he could find someone with the same type of power adapter to try that one. If He knows someone who has a multimeter/voltage meter ask them to check the adapter for output. Also Is it the correct adapter for the laptop? I've come across situations where people have been given the wrong adaptor or managed to switch it over with someone elses. This can result in an adapter which apprears to be powering on but not able to supply the correct voltage to the laptop. There is normally a label on the laptop to say what the input voltage should be and normally one on the adaptor too.
the other posiblility is that he has managed to break the power plug in the laptop... If he has been overenthusiastic plugging it in it may have lifted the connector partly off the motherboard.
first thing to do is to try another suitable adapter if he can locate one after that it's possibly the motherboard connector.
