asus p5q pro dvd sata problem

Hi I have an asus p5q pro motherboard and tried to add a pioneer sata dvd drive as the original sony dvd seemed to be faulty from new.
the pc and bios all seem to recognize the drive ,But as soon as a disk is put in it goes into a total lock and the read/write light just keeps flashing ,i have to get the disk out manually, and disconnect the power supply to the unit to stop it .this is exactly the same as the previous Sony dvd sata drive .
I have two 500 gig drives and a ide dvd drive that all work well ,i am running win7 pro,and have tried everything including changing cables etc, the possibility that i have managed to get two new faulty drives is so small . If i plug any other sata hard drives in they work just fine.the old IDE dvd drive works fine .
would be grateful for any help ...thanks Dave

    Hi,....
try put in a bootable cd and reboot your pc then set the bios boot up to cd/dvd....save and exit.
if your computer can boot to cd, the dvd is OK/good (your system problem)
    but,
if your computer cannot boot to cd, the dvd is faulty and need to replace.

    ok .....goodluck
