HDD space recovery

Hi Guys, Im trying to recover some space on my R40 Thinkpad 40 gig HDD. I had about 37 gig used so I deleated all obsolete programs and files, so now, not much on there, but still only showing about 2 gigs freespace, I'm probably looking at a reinstall, but any ideas appreciated, thanks.

You could start by downloading Advanced System Optimiser (I have a key if you need it). Let it remove all the junk from your HDD. Then run windows Disk Defragment tool to rake up all the little gaps in the storage.

If you have a lot of music or films on the drive you might want to look at getting an external HDD to store them on.

don't know much about the thinkpad or what operating system you are using but generally a couple of things to try are

empty the recycle bin

you could run a program like crap cleaner (its free and does as its name suggests)

if you have system restore enabled you could reduce the amount of space reserved for back ups

you could also do a defrag but it could be slow due to the amount of free space so do this after the others

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm running XP Proff with SP 3 . came with the recovery cd set, and have cleared everything out, no JPG'S, movies or music,recycle bin empty, have run avg, malwarebites, both found nothing, defrigged it 'n all. Have also run WINDOW WASHER and ADVANCED SYSTEM CARE......Only program left now is Autodata, around 100 M I think, and was difficult to install so I'd prefer to keep it if possible.

download latest version of ccleaner-use it to uninstall programs as well as clean the cache-if you click tools>uninstall then scroll down to java you will quite possibly see a shed load of java updates,i deleted all mine bar the latest

you can also clear/clean all your temp/cache folders under C:/windows -> might work...
