warning then laptop crashed

hi guys please tell if this is possible i turned off my firewall to download a file off the net . next i received a message saying that if i did not register (and pay a fee ) with this particular site, my pc would be at risk of crashing. i declined and the next moment my pc and turned off and has not started since (it wont switch on ) could i have been hacked and over clocked ? ta in advance

no the pc does not try boot but all the leds come on for 5 secs and switches off

I doubt its killed it, probably installed something that told it to shut down.

Does it power on at all?

have u an install disc ? if u have but in drive and see if its reads that and stays on longer ? if windows 7 let that repair

i agree with thewizardofodds should'nt turn off any security whether its router security or software security on the os no matter what software it is it's never worth taking it down. it is their to protect you and the most important thing on pcs/laptops information thats stored on there.

use either
1.reset the bios by removing the battery for a 1-4 mins
2.should tell you how to reset bios in your laptop manual

should bootup now hopefully.

disconnect it from the net until you get it sorted
to keep your comp/laptop safe.

option 1: then try going into safe mode either that or use a live cd
scan for all
spyware using spybot sd /adaware/spysweeper
use your intrusion detection software to scan for threats eg kav 2011/nod/avg
malware use malwarebytes.

you might need to turn off system restore because some virus's and spyware consider it a hiding place.but remember when you do you lose all restore points.

option 2:wipe it all reinstall like smirnoff_rules.
i think you might need to reinstall anyway like smirnoff_rules advise's because of the threat of the file without knowing the damage its caused or will continue to cause if left.

might also want to check router logs after pc/laptop up and running.just make sure its all secure.

try this suggestion and it may help you if not then your laptop BIOS has been wiped off, it can be repaired by a professional IT engineer, but it will cost you a few bobs.

Step 1:
take the battery off connect the power charger to your laptop but not to the main keep your finger on the power button on laptop pressed down then plug-in to the main for about 10 seconds let everything go. now click on power button and see if it start, if not then go to the next step.

Step 2:
Remove all memory sticks from laptop and make sure the battery is not connected try again as described above. What would happen laptop will be confused because there is no memories installed it will be looking for it this time hopefully the BIOS will be rested automatically put everything back on if the procedure successfully completed and with some luck your laptop will start, if it did keep taping on "F8" and restore to one of the bold date 2 or 3 days before the problem started.

It would would be help full if you can mention the file name and rough guide of the site that caused you this problem for others not to be victims of heartless crooks that caused you this serious problem.
Also come to my surprise when you've been asked to use install disk the time when you made yourself clear that laptop won't start at all. Wow!!!! Salami

What make is your Pc or Laptop ?

I Have seen this before when a computers BIOS is corrupted
usually after a bad flash.

A Virus could also easily do this.

It will not try to boot because the bios is the part that works the system before windows starts and without a good BIOS file your computer will probably not even know it has a power button, keyboard or mouse or be able to use them.

You are lucky in one respect that you still get lights this is a good sign if your BIOS chip has a recovery sector in,if this is the case you will probably still be able to access it with out having to remove and programme .

Some computer BIOS have a protected recovery sector but to access this requires specific key presses whilst power is applied.

If you have a PC Tower open up the case and have a look at the bios chip type and also see if it is easily removable.

If you have a Laptop research its BIOS type in google and see if it has a recovery sector then you can try the BIOS repair sequence.
