Ok, this is from another site & a little old (2007) but it's worth a try...

To resolve Windows Update error 8000FFFF, try the following steps:
    1) Launch REGEDIT
    2) Go into HKLM\COMPONENTS, and check if these three values exist under the COMPONENTS key:
    PendingXmldentifier
    NextQueueEntryIndex
    AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
    3) Providing they do exist, back up the Components key, then delete the three above values.
    4) Restart the computer, and Windows Update should now be working fine.
This is assuming that you're using Windows Vista. There's another fix but the Reg edit seemed to be more successful.

Just for reference, this is the other solution people tried...

1: Open up "Control Panel" and navigate your way to "Programs and Features".
2: Click "View installed updates" on the left hand side.
3: Find the update KB929777 and uninstall it.
4: Attempt to install the update again in Windows Update
5: Once successful, restart your PC.

    EIDT...

This may also be a memory issue. Done a bit more reading on this, things have gone quiet in here. If you have 4GB of memory or more, the update program don't like it. Try removing a memory stick & trying again with less memory installed

      Error code 8000ffff

I have checked further into my windows history and the very first error code is 80004004 then a long string of the for mensioned code if this helps towards a solution!! Also I can't find HKLM\COMPONENTS in REGEDIT!!
If any one can break down the path further it would be appreciated.

      Cheers

could you provide a little bit of information?

        your operating system?

is it XP Vista or 7? also which edition ?

where does the error occur? is it just a certain application
that triggers it? like windows update windows live or somethink else?

          error codes

          As requested.

I have a 2 year old Dell inspiron laptop which came with Vista. it is set up to for a regular Windows live update which it did for 12 months with no problem.

          When the following occured:

          Update for Windows Vista (KB968389)
          Installation date: ***8206;18/***8206;10/***8206;2009 18:46
          Installation status: Failed
          Error details: Code 80004004

          Then the following occured:

Update for Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility View List for Windows Vista (KB975364)
          Installation date: ***8206;28/***8206;10/***8206;2009 12:02
          Installation status: Failed
          Error details: Code 8000FFFF

Then this occured every time it tried to update, to date:

Platform Update for Windows Vista (KB971644)
          Installation date: ***8206;17/***8206;11/***8206;2009 13:25
          Installation status: Failed
          Error details: Code 8000FFFF

There is about one hundred attempts of the latter, to date.

I have Norton security, ran ccleaner, ran malware. but still no joy!!

          Hope this info helps
          Cheers

                  1. On the Vista Start menu there's a search field. Type services.msc and hit enter
                  2. Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Stop it.
                  3. Find the Windows Update service and stop it.
                  4. Using Windows Explorer go to C:\Windows and delete the Software Distribution folder.
                  5. Enable/Start both services that were disabled in steps 2 and 3.
                  6. Run windows update again.
