If you only have one account set up on the pc then you are already an administrator.
If you have an admin account and then a seperate user account then go into the start menu and select shutdown, If you do not get the option to "switch user" then try this.

once the pc has started up press the "ctrl, alt and delete" "buttons together. the Windows task manager should open up, then select the shutdown menu at the top and select "switch user".

the other option is to go into the control panel into "user accounts" and select " change the way users log on and off" you will be able to see the user accounts which are available on your machine and can alter the way you log on initially

you need to see if you can give yourself admin rights.. have a read of this Make your account an Administrator in Windows XP

There is another way to get to it. - Click on Start
      - Click Run
      - type lusrmgr.msc and click the OK button
This will open the Local Users and Group window for you and you will then be able to make your account changes.

If you get the access denied you will probably find that there is already a local admin account set up, first try ctrl-alt-delete, use the 'switch user' option, it should give you the admin option there, the password is could well be blank. I am not at an XP box right now so cannot try it besides I am local admin on all my office and home kit anyway.

EDIT, I see Dreamer is on the case anyway at the same time..
