I had the same problem and just loaded k-lite audio pack and solved all the audio issues that I had ever had with xp in one.

if the audio is onboard then you will have to get the drivers from the motherboard manufactures if its a sound card same thing, try reinstalling the driver through device manager which will show the driver that is missing with a yellow asterik.

Stupid question.... Do you use speakers built into the monitor or external speakers?

How do they connect if external? USB or on green 3.5mm jack?

Is the green 3.5mm jack correctly plugged in?

Do you have any errors showing on the USB in Device Manager?

Normally I use the built in speakers , since the problem started i have tried the ext speakers by plugging the 3.5mm green plug into the output of the pc , still no sound .the latest what i have tried is" fix it" by microsoft which is a live diagnostic service ,their report was that my volume must be muted, i presume they based this on the fact that my drivers must be in order.
                      no errors in device manager
ta for all help sofar regards

To be honest this is a driver issue. Get the right driver and this will sort out the problem. Also search keeping in mind that the best driver is that of the laptop manufacturer.

to determine your onboard sound we will need the name of the motherboard could you tell us the name

                          if you dont know it

check on the startup screen when the pc boots up

                          or

go to run type dxdiag and when it loads it should be next to system model.
