Missing DVD Drive

Hi

I've just done a reinstall of my computer - windows XP + sp3 - on a new hard drive , everything was up and running when I changed a couple of letters on a couple of the drives. Since then when I put a disc in the dvd drive , the drive spins up but the computer doesn't find it.

I've tried updating the driver , uninstalling & reboot and physically unplugging and changing the sata socket ( there's 4 on the Motherboard ) all to no avail. If it makes any difference it's a Writemaster SH-S223F SCSI DVDRW drive and it was working fine before I messed with it. Short of getting another dvd drive I don't know what else to try , anyone ?

Try this , they may be problem in the Motherbord port so tray to connected in the same port with HDD as e secondary device and I hope will work againe .

Changing drive letters can cause a whole host of problems.

As this is a new install I'd be tempted to change around any SATA connections, if there's more than one connected.

Then look at the boot sequence in the bios.


Had a slightly different problem with my system after changing a couple of drive letters. Ended up doing a fresh install with my 3rd drive disconnected until the full install was done.

I didn't try the socket that I've got my hard drive in but I can try over the weekend. I did try it in the others , there are 4 on the board.

When I looked in the bios a/ I wasn't sure what I was lokking for and b/ couldn't find anything amiss.

Do you think a restore would actually help in this respect?

If this is a fresh install you won't have any restore points saved.

The Sata ports should be numbered, try looking in the manual.
you have to use the No.1 port first, then No.2, and so on. If No1 isn't populated the system won't look any further. Had this problem on a PCI card for my PC.

I've just read your first post again. Is this a SCSI or SATA DVD drive?
The SCSI will probably be on a PCI card if you have SATA on-board. In the bios you need to look for 'Boot Sequence' & make sure your HDD is last on the list. Then make sure the DVD drive is listed, it might not show as a DVD but a SCSI device. It's been such a long time since I've used SCSI I'm having problems remembering how it all works.

When you look at the device manager , you've got the DVD/CD drives section. Look in there and the dvd drive is listed as - TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223F SCSI CdRom Device ( Samsung I think ). However it's connected to the motherboard useing a SATA socket.

I've got my main hard drive on socket 1 and the DVD drive was/is on 2 but I've tried it on all the others. It's listed in bios and like I said it was working until I changed the drive letter useing disk management.

P.s there are no pci cards on my system.

Ok, this goes beyond what I can understand without reading things that make my head hurt.

I wasn't aware you could connect SCSI drives on a SATA port.

It could be easier to install again with the HDD in port 1, let windows start again & it should put the HDD as C: & the DVD as D:
