clean install of vista

I have a dell lattitude running vista home basic and I want to wipe the hard drive and reinstall vista or vista home premium but it wont format the hard drive just keeps the old files. can I wipe the drive and reinstall without getting too compilcated?

do you have a vista disk and drivers if so you could
use Dban (google) to wipe the hdd clean then load the vista disk
if you got a restore disk on hdd it will wipe that clean aswell

Thanks Elric, I got the Dban disk and it worked a treat,
wiped everything and just reinstalled what I needed and the laptop is running like a dream.
