Windows 7 not showing correct IP address on wi-fi connection

This is driving me nuts. I've still got things to try but looking for ideas.

Got a new PC with W7 already installed & activated. 64 updates already installed, so it has connected to the internet previously.

All my wi-fi dongles use the RTL8187L chipset. Latest W7 drivers are installed, dongle is installed & 'working correctly'.

I can scan for routers, select & enter password. The connections manager shows connected but no network access. The WLAN Utility shows the IP address as 168.xxx.xx.xx.x instead of 192.xxx.xx.xx.x, the subset mask is correct but no gateway (probably due to the incorrect IP address).
Tried 2 other connections that are open... Same thing.

Then installed the software for my mobile phone. Used the phone as a modem & got it showing on the network manager as OTA connected.... but it's also showing no network access.

Drivers & software have been removed/uninstalled, W7 restarted, drivers & software installed, W7 restarted... still not working.

The router is working as both my previous PC & my lappy (both on XP) have no problems connecting.

I'm not able to connect via cable at the moment, but W7 has been updated prior to my taking ownership so assuming for now that the LAN is working.

Next step will be to remove HDD's & install a spare HDD I can install XP onto. This is more to check the mobo is working correctly & the problem is in W7 somewhere.

Anybody out there with some knowledge of W7 wi-fi issues & solutions?

    Quick update....

Now installed XP on my spare HDD. Working 100%, so the problem's with Windows 7 & not the hardware.

when you have the win xp hdd in take a note of the ip address you have been given and then put the win 7 disc in and enter this as a static ip and see if it connects.

It sounds like there is a static ip address entered in win7.

I had already done that & checked for static IP's. Gave in & pulled the Key out, formatted & reinstalled Win7.

All working 100%... except the data transfer rates on USB sticks are shit & it took 45mins to copy Photoshop CS4 from DVD onto my HDD... XP took 6 mins to do the same job.

To me it sounds like your default gateway isnt serving out a DHCP address to your PC. 168.xxx.xx.xxx address is commonly handed out my Windows when the PC hasnt been issued an address from somebody else. Lets say your router is 192.168.1.1, you need to access that router and enable the DHCP server in it.

If you cant reach it currently, statically set your IP address to something on the same network as that router, for example: 192.168.1.2.

Hi Mate, you are thinking of a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx ip address that windows uses when it is supposed to b looking for a dhcp server and none is found.

168.xxx.xxx.xxx is used by a few different router manufacturers.

Good to see the OP has it sved anyway and long live xp
