Why do you want to use the samsung apps is there anything in particular that you want that isn't on the market
Have you ever been able to use samsung apps and does the phone connect to internet using wifi and data

When you updated firmware did you reapply settings for wifi and data?,
I doubt there is much you will find useful within the samsung apps but check connection settings to rule that out.
To connect to the market click on the icon, log into your account (or create one if necessary) and the apps should be visible.
Any particular reason you are on 2.1, that is quite an outdated firmware and you may find many benefits in updating to one of the newer roms.
The problem with kies i believe will be due to driver issues, look for the samsung drivers for your particular OS ie samsung galaxy s windows xp drivers.
Once you feel comfortable using your phone i would recommend installing one of the newer custom roms, they will offer a massive improvement over stock roms but there is quite a variety, comes down to personal choice then.

Android 2.1 had loads of problems with the Galaxy S connection to Kies.

Make sure Kies is up-to-date & check if you can connect the phone. You will have to make sure that the USB connection is setup for Kies, it's in the settings menu somewhere.
If you can connect, search for software updates for the phone. The current version is 2.3.3 with 2.3.4 not far away.

Given I don't know where you are in the world, you might not have access to the latest firmware.
If that's the case you could update it yourself. But you need to make sure you can access the DOWNLOAD mode.
To do this; turn the phone off, press & hold the volume down button, home key & power button. You should see a picture of an android digging a hole.

As long as you can do this then you can manually update the phone.

Visit samfirmware.com & register. You can then download the latest firmware, PIT file & Odin flashing tool. There are tutorials to follow.

You may find that it's not worth accessing the Samsung Apps, most of them are useless.
