    Stolen Samsung Galaxy Ace

My wife got her bag nicked today, she had her brand new Samsung Galaxy Ace inside it and the dirty theif has now turned it off.
Can it be traced using the IMEI number by the network?

Can it be remotely locked if someone decides to put a different sim card into it?

    I hope i find this dirty ~~~~er, i'll cut his/her hands off

The probably can be traced, technically, but they never do unless it's a high profile crime investigation.

Phones can be blacklisted based on their IMEI, which renders them useless in the UK.

unfortunately they can either sell it abroad or use products that can change the imei.

illegal to do but dont think that would bother them as they have already broke the law now
Oh and by the way if my post has been at all helpfull

If it was on a contract, then just call the carrier, Voda,02,T-mob,Orange or 3 , report it lost or stolen. The sim card will get blocked and if the Ace was part of the contract they will block the phone too. Kinda renders it useless. Changing the IMEI is difficult and a petty thief would not know how to do it, More than likely he would sell it on to someone who will ship it abroad (a phone shop- independent one). How do I know this? Well I had a phone shop for 12 years and we had all manner of people trying to sell us Blocked(blacklisted) phones. We never touched them , that's why I was open for 12 years and managed to sell the shop on. I always stayed legit. Can't say that for most the independents nowadays. Check local shops see if they have it.

I`ve been in the gsm industry since startac days and believe me unfortunately there is plenty of shops that will say yeah we`ll give you ?20 as we can only use it for spares i.e. screen, ribbons connectors etc i still have unlocking kit and it is alot cheaper than it used to be when JIC was about so hence it is quite easy to change imei these days

We saw an increase last year in dodgy mother fu*kers.

But these were the people who would sell their high end phone, get the money in their pocket for a night out, then report the phone lost/stolen a day or two later & claim on the insurance.

Ain't had any more since we started reporting them to the network, providing all their details
