    Huawei dongle with Giffgaff sim

    Hi,

I have an unlocked Huawei E169G dongle and thought i'd try my Giffgaff sim in it, since they're offering "unlimited" data - something I'm aware is against their T&C, but anyway...

I'm using the 3 app thats preinstalled on the dongle. The dongle connects fine, but is insufferably slow. Perhaps there are some settings i'm missing? Or maybe this type of configuration just isn't possible? Finally, has anyone tried something similar?

    Thanks!

You need to check to see if the dongle is in 3G/HSDPA mode! If the LED is not blue/cyan but green, then you are in GPRS/EDGE mode!

If you try to force the modem into 3G Only mode but get no signal, then the new network may not offer 3G service!

    Have a look at: http://www.nerve.org.za/mdma/

Close all other dashboard software and run MDMA, it should give you a clearer idea of what's going on!!

      Thanks, Jim.

I set the network mode to '3G Only' and manually selected 'O2 (3G)' as the network. It connected and displayed 3.7Mb speed and was faster than before, but still nowhere near the quoted speed. I think that could just be network congestion, or maybe O2 throttle giffgaff?

      Thanks for the advice.

You will usually only get the claimed speed if:

        1. The serving cell and network supports the speed.
        2. It's around 3.30am and you're the only one using 3G.
        3. There isn't a fly sitting on the cell antenna!!

          Hi Mr Fug

Have you had any problems using Giff Gaff sim. I was thinking of giving my spare E160g (3 mobile) dongle to my son to use with giff gaff. I now use the E122 with 3 & it seems quicker.

Will look @ how to unlock the E160g if you've not had problems with Giff Gaff usage on internet.
