I assume that you don't wish to subscribe to the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) and want to use the handset as a normal phone?

This can be done partially but only via a cable and Blackberry's Desktop Manager.

I personally have tried it but things like the Blackberry browser doesn't work plus many other tools on the device because they are all tied in with the BIS.

I don't know what country you are in or what network but most countries offer BIS on a prepaid or Pay as you go basis.

There are lots of applications for Blackberry handsets! Some of the best ones are actually free from RIM (Blackberry) and even Whatsapp is now available for the Blackberry!

The quality of the applications seem in general to be better than Apple!
