    Mobile phone signal booster

hi there i just moved into a new house and its built to the latest standards, fully airtight and what have you so the mobile phone signal is virtualy nil inside the house but outside its perfect, can anybody point me in the direction of a mobile phone signal booster that works, my laptop works on a meteor pay as you go dongle which serves the purpose but this barely works indoors aswell, any sugestions greatly appreciated and the cheaper the better if possible.

    thanks in advance....OZ

I'd try setting up a passive system...

Antenna outside, short cable and antenna inside...

A repeater will cost way over ?400 and may only do 2G (i.e. not 3G) plus may need a license.

Something like this: Cell Phone Signal Booster | Wilson Cell Phone Booster | Wilson Cell Phone Repeaters / Home & Building Amplifiers & Repeaters - One to Two Rooms

Search the internet, I'm sure you'll find a DIY system!

The passive systems are a bit hit & miss. In theory they should work, and have for some people, but there are a lot more that failed to get them to work.

      A quick look on ebay.....

3G Signal booster with cradle - Just not sure how well it will work.

External mobile antenna - It will work as long as you keep the antenna attached to the back of your phone.

Both of these require the antenna to be fitted either near a window or externally. They also limit the mobile to the same as a standard corded home phone, not so mobile.

You can get similar antennas for the 3G dongles, but this might mean some adapting to the dongle.

I'd suggest checking Cel-Fi from Nextivity, this is the only legal signal booster in the UK, it does not depend on broadband connection and apart from boosting your 3G signal it does increase battery life, data downloads etc. There are more benefits to it so check their website for more details. Our company got one and it's literally a plug and play device, setting up takes 2 minutes. Hope that helps.

I didn't know there were illegal signal boosters. Cool, where do I get one

All signal boosters are legal. Unless you need planning permission to mount it to your house due to it's size.

And here you're unfortunately wrong. At least in case of the UK. It is legal to sell mobile phone signal boosters but it is illegal to use them unless they conform with Ofcom regulations.

Here is more info on wether mobile phone signal boosters are legal in the UK or not.

I made a passive system, and it doesn't work.. I only used a telly aerial outside mind, pointed at the transmitter, and a omnidirectional antenna inside, but it did jack shit.

yeah but dk members have mostly not really bothered about whether something is legal or not,

as shady has pointed out, not many of us care if it's legal or not.

I'm just a little suspicious of such a claim from the site that's trying to sell hardware that's over priced.

Car kits are legal. They boost the signal. They are also a lot cheaper.

I haven't seen a phone with an antenna plug in ages.. do modern phones have a means of being boosted?

I can't think of a cell phone without a antenna socket but they are all now internal... The user can't access the socket without case removal or some unsightly drilling!!

Some still do, just don't ask me to list any.

It's only been in the last 2 years that they have been removed, at least from the high end phones.

Most use the USB port now... If you're willing to pay huge amounts for the kits.

Maybe not the best way to go, but a slightly older phone connected to a car kit for use at home. Either use call forwarding (if your network supports it) or switch the SIM over.

Or you could just ask a network to fit a BTS site on your house. They pay about ?5000 per year for letting them do it.
