Use of mobile phones in data collection

Hi! New in this site and am trying to use a USB modem to work with some open source software for mass messaging to mobile phones.

Has anyone here any experience to share regarding the use of mobile phones for data collection particularly in remote contexts?

    Thanks!

Are you talking a USB modem, i.e. 3G dongle, then it will have to be an internet based messaging system.

If you use a mobile phone for your connection, you will just need a SIM that has 'unlimited' messages. There are certain phones that work better than others with the automated text marketing software. A 3G compatible phone will be able to send more messages per hour than a non 3G phone.

If you need more info let me know, a friend has used these before. Just can't remember any of the finer details.
