This should work on the following phones and devices:

HTC Desire, HTC Desire S, HTC Wildfire, HTC Aria, HTC Incredible S, HTC Droid Incredible 2, HTC Thunderbolt, HTC Evo 4G, HTC View, HTV Flyer, HTC Sensation, HTC Evo 3D and the myTouch 4G

That link is for rooting the phone, not debranding it.

Htc have released an update for the desire which is debranded.

Techradar have all the info & links you will need

Would you not be able to just flash a stock unbranded HTC rom by using the same method above?

Yes, but why take the risk in rooting the phone when HTC have a release that won't invalidate the warranty.

I have had mine fixed twice with main board problems and both rooted.

Suppose it depends on what you want to do with your phone.

If you do that update you will have the new Hboot which you wuill have to downgrade to s off again or htc clip.

I own a HTC Clip so I'm laughing.

Luckily for you most of the problems with the HTC handsets are in the IC chip that's used for the o/s storage & activation.
When it cocks up there's no real way for them to check on the data stored.

Had a Desire come into the shop as it crashed a lot when on-line. It was going back under the warranty so I flashed it with the debranded update. Imagine my shock when it failed to fully boot after the flash .
But it's a good way to ensure the handset will be replaced when things have been changed, contuary to htc's wishes.
