I've got the 710 and went through this exact thing.

You can't use a full song , only something about 40 secs / less than 1MB. Then using Zune you have to change the genre to ringtone then connect phone and add it through the settings.

I found that the windows 7 mobile isn't as 'finished' or 'sorted' as it could be and I've heard recently that they're work on windows 8 mobile alongside the PC version for later this year rather than doing much more to it.
